Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

Tucked away few blocks from the white sugar sandy beaches in Gulf Shores, Alabama, an ideal place for enjoying Gulf Shores Vacation Rentals, is the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, home to over 300 animals. Opened in June 1989 as Zooland Animal Park and established as a private enterprise by Joey Ward, who in 1991 formed the Zoo Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization and donated 17 acres for the zoo, which relies mainly on memberships, admissions, and donations.

The unbelievable struggle of the Alabama Zoo against three major hurricanes drew the attention of Animal Planet, which made this challenge as the prime time reality television series called The Little Zoo That Could™. The show presented the zoo director Patti Hall along with her staff and volunteers, as they evacuated the animals from the hurricanes, and was shot on site at the Gulf Shores, Alabama facility.

Home to the tigers, lions, monkeys, bears, and macaws, beside many others animals that populate this Gulf Coast haven, there is also a reptile house, petting zoo, aviary, and daily animal shows in the summers, making it a memorable Gulf Shores Vacation Rentals for you and your family. Other events include the annual Zoo Camp held in the last week of June, where over 200 children participate and are divided into two groups and sessions as per their ages. Conducted by trained volunteers and licensed teachers, the camp has age specific games, arts and crafts projects, and other zoo related events like fun activities and numerous hands-on education to learn. So, visit the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo and make use of your Gulf Shores Vacation Rentals, by grabbing a sense of wildlife action.

Battleship Memorial Park

At Mobile’s Battleship Memorial Park, you don’t have to look very far to find heroes. From the Battleship USS ALABAMA to the Submarine USS DRUM and 25 combat aircraft, the spirit of military pride is alive and well. Voyage through time and revisit an era of adventure and bravery as you tour our many exhibits.
The recipient of nine WWII Battle Stars, the Battleship USS ALABAMA and her crew of 2,500 saw action in the Atlantic for a year before joining the Pacific Fleet in mid-1943. There she fought at such key locations as Leyte, the Gilbert Islands and Okinawa. After the signing of the war ending surrender documents in September 1945, USS ALABAMA, or the “Mighty A”, as she was known, led the American Fleet into Tokyo Bay. Aboard the Battleship, explore 12 decks, climb inside gun turrets, get locked in the Brig, man a 12 mm gun, and much more.
Nearby, explore the Submarine USS DRUM. The DRUM is named for a large Sea-Bass found off the North Atlantic Coast. With its crew of 72 men, the DRUM conducted 13 war patrols, was awarded 12 Campaign stars, and sank 15 Japanese ships totaling over 80,000 tons. Visitors can climb inside and see the conditions that confronted our Navy’s submariners.
There is so much to see at Battleship Park! Come visit and return to a time of bravery and adventure and relive the many thrilling stories that played out aboard the heroes of Battleship Memorial Park.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge – Jeff Friend Trail

From AL 59, travel westward on AL 180 to the Jeff Friend Trail on the left (south) side of the road [6.0]. Drive through the gate and follow the road to the parking lot and trailhead. The Jeff Friend trail is a 1-mile loop to Little Lagoon and is accessible to disabled persons. Habitats include maritime forest, freshwater marsh, and open water along the north shore of Little Lagoon. A small observation deck midway down the trail at Little Lagoon is a great place to set up a spotting scope and look for common loon, bufflehead, and horned grebe in winter. Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Sandwich Tern, and Osprey may be seen over the water. On the trail, woodland birds including Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Summer Tanager, and Northern Parula may be observed in summer. At dusk and dawn (please keep in mind the refuge is closed at dark), Chuck-will's-widow and Great Horned Owl are commonly heard in spring and summer. Whip-poor-will and Eastern Screech-Owl are also occasionally heard calling. The 2-mile Centennial Trail connects the Jeff Friend and Pine Beach Trails and has forested wetlands on the eastern end that would be good places to look for Prothonotary Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, and other migrants in spring and fall. Return to AL 180.

From Highway 59 in Gulf Shores, Alabama, turn west on Highway 180 and continue for approximately:

6 miles to the Jeff Friend Trail
7.5 miles to the Refuge Office
9 miles to the Pine Beach Trail

The Wesley House

Eden Gardens State Park located near Santa Rosa Beach in northwest Florida preserves a renovated two-story house with the white columns and wrap-around porches glamorized in Gone with the Wind. The property comprises part of an estate owned by William Henry Wesley and his family during the 1800s. A timber family, the Wesleys operated a sawmill on the property.

In 1963, writer and publisher Lois Maxon purchased and renovated the estate, which she gave to the state of Florida in 1968, according to the Florida Division of Recreation and Parks, which operates the property.

Now called Eden Gardens State Park, the property offers a beautiful wedding location, and we visited the property in spring time for a family wedding. The ancient oak tree, affectionately called The Wedding Tree, makes a natural stage for a ceremony on the great lawn that runs from The Wesley House to Tucker Bayou.

Reflection pools, koi ponds, camellia and rose gardens add to a visitor's delight as do sculptures of Mark Twain's characters.
